Joe Coleman’s Sporting Goods
In 1964, Natick High had a star pitcher who graduated and went into the major leagues. His Father ran a sporting goods store downtown. In those days, both the Coleman’s and the Outdoor Store managed to compete and remain successful.
When Joe Sr. retired, the store went out. Here’s a picture of Joe Coleman and Son’s Store. Thanks to the Morse Institute Library, for the picture.
Some personal memories about the Colemans…
The Colemans lived on Bradford Rd. in a house next door to one of my good friends. They had a pitching mound in the backyard and let us use it any time.
They also had a three-legged Boxer who always ‘helped’ us retrieve the baseballs that hit the ground while we played catch. He made it very difficult to throw ground balls to each other for infield practice.
When I was 11 an expansion team was created in Little League that was sponsored by the Coleman’s store. I was chosen off a Farm League team to go play for the ‘Washington Senators’. That was where Joe Jr. was playing at the time before moving on to the Detroit Tigers.
