Spring is coming and there will be graduations at Natick High School very soon. I would imagine the seniors are posing for the superlatives and planning their proms. Going through some stuff, I thought the Natick readers would enjoy this look back at a time long ago. I imagine these two, with their appetites, had plenty of hot dogs at Caseys. The title of this superlative is Biggest Appetite.

There might be a pancake breakfast coming up, and maybe the appetite is still there.

There are lots of seniors planning for activities at the High School right about now. From Senior Picnic, to Prom, to Graduation, they’re following a long tradition and some of it means having fun. Here’s a look back.

Could our best shot at a seat on the Board of Selectmen come next year if this guy taking aim runs again? I hope so.

In Stoneham last year, a $3 million override was defeated.
“It’s been very quiet. There have been no signs. Both campaigns have really stayed in the fog,” Town Clerk John Hanright commented on a Tuesday evening in June of 2007, an hour before the polls closed.
“You kept everybody in the fog and that’s a good thing, because nobody knew what was going on,” the Town Clerk would later say to the overwhelmingly pro-override audience gathered in the Town Hall hearing room Tuesday night.” Read the whole story here. http://www.stonehamindependent.com/archives/2007/06/20/1
In Natick, I wonder if the opposite holds true, as someone set up a web site to make sure people know all about the fates that await budget trimming efforts. For too many years, the Natick administration has used the Schools, and Public Safety as scapegoats. Rather than support what’s best in our town, they blame those who are most vital to our town’s lifeblood. Read more »

Someone asked me if Mark Twain was being assigned in any English classes in the Natick School system. I thought, probably not, as we aren’t allowed to have racist stereotypes poisoning the minds of our youth. And as long as Fred “Dirk” Coburn is on the School Committee, we’ll be subject to the whims of political correctness.

What follows is a link to a great article that should be must reading for all of Natick.
It’s important for voters and residents to hear all sides in an issue. Click on this link to read an insightful article revolving around the possibility of High School renovation, and more.

When you listen to some elected officials talk about the High School, they’re quick to dismiss the renovation possibilities. There is a better way. The current batch of elected officials don’t want the public to know that. One example, has the proponents of a new building say “better to build new because the state reimburses 50 percent.” They leave out the detail that 50 percent of $90 million leaves $45 million for the town to cover when a fine renovation could be had for half that.
The link gives us much more to think about, so before you make a decision on who to vote for, check it out.

Click on this link to the story in the Metrowest Daily News to read about the School budget http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/news/x1151560639
When they announced the 3 percent per year contract, someone on the Fincom said the 3rd year would really amount to between 4 and 5 percent. They were correct. When you read an announcement from negotiators, always remember there’s a bit of sales going on. The School Superintendent was using his skill to sway public opinion.

Tass Filledes wrote the following letter to the Editor of the Metrowest Daily News; Here’s how it begins “Why pick on Natick’s mascot?
Why Natick? Some time ago Chief Caring Hands from Stoughton showed concern that the Natick High School mascot was “The Redmen.” She thought it was offensive and disrespectful to the Indians. The Natick School Committee voted to eliminate the Redmen name and replace it with something else, still to be determined. Read more »

A couple of years ago, there was a movement amongst certain town officials to try and put through an additional tax on homeowners in order to pay for amenities that otherwise would require an override. In other words, spend money on things of interest to a small group of friends who have some ideas but no other way to pay for them. It was called a CPA tax. (Isn’t it interesting that every year they find a gimmick to pay for things that a normal budget can’t afford?) Read more »

Here’s the cover of the Natick High Yearbook for 1953 with the famous “Redman” embossed in silver. Looks good to me and most residents who grew up here. Of course there’s a vocal minority who are causing some problems, and a few elected officials who won’t take a public position along with a couple who need to be voted out. Here’s a picture of the yearbook.
There’s a lot to be proud of, and whether the Indian is full face, three quarters, or profile, he’s the symbol we should keep. Let’s all visit the businesses that are collecting signatures, and tell the School Committee and the Selectmen what they don’t seem to want to hear.
